Big seeding day! I have six old varieties of grains that I want to grow out in the market garden beds. I’m going to test growing them at conventional spacing and in spacing inspired by the System of Rice Intensification method.
Have you tried growing ancient grains?

I’ve grown Quinoa, which the wild birds ate before that I realized that it was ready to harvest. I also tried growing Amaranth which the critters harvested before I could. Now I realize why early farmers had so many kids and a couple of dogs.
You need a nursery that is protected. In a building or a fence that is completely closed up.
